The picture at left is a Google Earth shot of the area of the action on April 7, 1966.  It all occurred on the edge of the Chu Pong Mountains, which was always a NVA intensive infiltration route.  In the distance to the North one can see LZ-Xray location, as well as some of our other patrol areas, like the Duc Co Special Forces Camp and the NVA hospital location where Delta incurred KIA's on 1 Nov 1965.  (Patrols into Cambodia are another subject.) At the time most of us only knew that we were "close to the Cambodian border" which was only five "clicks" to the west.  One can also see LZ Eagle which was a location of intense action during Operation Lincoln.  LZ Eagle is about 1 "Klick" from the Cambodian Border.
Most of us remember the fire fights where our friends were killed or injured.  The fire fight of April 7 1966 was one of the worst for RECON platoon, killing SGT Lute a squad leader, PFC Bailey and the medic SP 4 Bailor,  as well as wounding virtually everyone in SGT Lute's squad.  Here are a few of the details describing that action.
